Title: EII+ HD convert to HxC without HDD
Post by: Paula on August 13, 2017, 07:34:46 AM
All,

 So I've seen a number of threads on here about this, but can't find a concise answer. Here's the issue I have;

I have an EII+ HD that the HDD and FDD are rusted. I've replaced the PSU and the tantalum capacitors (a tant died and killed the PSU).

I've disconnected the HDD data and power cables from the HDD end

I've installed the HxC in place of the FDD and put in a cable.

I've copied the files from the Lothratek website for the EII onto an SDCARD, and selected "emuii_os_3_1HD.hfe"

  The two EPROMs installed are;

  EMU Systems 2.5 (IC42)
  EII+HD Scanner  V3 (IC28)

When I power up the EII it says "Emulator 2 Now booting" and does nothing, I've waited around 30 minutes and still nothing.

Both lights on the HxC are lit (SD Access and floppy access) permanently.

Someone kindly emailed me images for the EII+ 2.1 and EII Main 2.5 roms, which I've tried both in place of IC42 (main CPU ROM).

I'd really like ot get this beauty working, but I feel I'm missing something.

Should I replace the scanner ROM (if so could someone email me one please?)
Should the EII+ HD boot without a HDD in?

Can someone offer some advice please? I'm totally stumped.

Paula

Tried this myself. You can either hook up the disk again (data & power). The installed OS will always look for the HDD if it's dead it will switch to the HxC. The other way is a new set of Eproms with another OS which will initiate the boot from the HxC without looking for a boot record on the HDD.

Do you know where I can get a matching pair of EPROMs please?

In the meantime, how long does it take before it boots from FDD with a dead HDD in?

Many thanks
Paula

My EII with a dead HD takes about 45 seconds max to boot. I do have the binary image (V 2.3) of the Main ROM which is AFAIK all you need to change. I can not send you the physical EPROM though as I have no possibility to transfer the file to one.

YES YES YES

Installed V 2.3 ROM
Used OS 2.6 HD file
and it boots!!!

Now all I need is a sample disk to make sure it plays back.

Hi All,

I'm new to the group and I'm a new owner of a EII+HD. I've read over everything for removing the internal Hard Drive and installing a HxC floppy drive. I believe I now understand the whole process and I'm ready to implement.

My unit has EPROM Main V 2.5, and Scanner V 3.0.

I believe I need to flash the Main from V2.5 to V2.3, if I've read everything correctly.

Is it possible for someone to send me or point me to the binary image for Main V 2.3?

Many thanks!
Reggie

Hello Reginator,

Hi, I ended up burning the EPROMS myself.

The yahoo EII group has all the bin files. I purchased a programmer and blank EPROMS, and followed these instructions: https://medium.com/@GregSimon_/emulator-ii-ram-1556d52a72ae

The instructions has links to what you need to buy which makes it simple.

I hope this helps.
