E-mu Emulator Sampler User Forum for the EIII EII EI and EIII XP

I've found a Emax Se at a decent price. From the pictures I see a port on the back, blue color with the SCSI label in it. Is this original? Has it been upgraded? Can I connect a SCSI drive/ zip ?

If the sampler has "just" the labels Emax and SE on it, the SCSI port has probably been added afterwards.
Which is perfectly possible, so this shouldn't be a problem really. Upgrade kits were available from E-Mu, and nowadays also from Ted Summers on the Yahoo Emax Group (although in the latter case, an external port must be added afterwards because his kit only contains an internal SCSI connector)

If the sampler has the Plus label in addition to Emax and SE, then the SCSI port *might* be factory installed. But note that even not all Plus Emax samplers had an external SCSI port by default (like mine - which only has an internal SCSI connector factory installed).

Anyway: if it's really a SCSI DB25 connector, I wouldn't have a lot of doubts. I can't imagine that anyone would add a *fake* SCSI port to an Emax just for the fun of it :) So you can assume it works (or has been working in the past :)

Where is the DB25 connector located by the way ? Is it installed in the "EMAX" label on the back, or somewhere else ?

Mc Cartney did a joke wich made a huge scandal : the EII was written on the back of his machine (an EII) and the EIII was nor released yet.
Him, or someone of his team, has added a "I" by using some adhesive tape, and every musician who saw this on TV and shows called us, wanting IMMEDIATELY an EIII, telling it was a scandal to give one out to Mac Cartney by favoritism. It was hard to convince them the mavhine didn't exist yet !  ;D

That certainly looks like an official E-Mu SCSI upgrade kit (which doesn't mean that E-Mu has done the upgrade themselves) !

It has the appropriate grey coloured mounting plate and has been installed exactly on the location where the E-Mu manual said it should be installed.

I guess you don't have pictures of the inside, since it's probably not your Emax yet ?

Anyway, I would certainly buy it if it has an attractive price, because this Emax can probably be considered to be an Emax Plus (the most extended version of Emax)   

I've asked for a pict from the inside to see the SCS chip type. Too bad...
I am not going further, I don't need problems if after the, one tells me I didn't give the good advice.

You're right, don't have pics from the inside. I'm just gathering all the info I can, I'm going to meet the owner and the sampler tomorrow. I will test it as much as I can. I have a few bank copied to floppy. Unfortunately couldn't find the M.U.S.T disk for testing. Any advice on which thing should I go first for failure?

Sorry but what do you meant by the TRMPWR???

Dr C probably means Termination Power (of the SCSI chain).

Since you are a candidate buyer of this unit, it's normal that you don't have further details on the internals of the unit and about the proper working of the SCSI kit right now.

Just ask the seller to hook up a SCSI device and let him show that it works properly.

What about the keyboard? I know that when booted up panel leds start to turn off as a initial test is performed.

I have the diagnostic manual so I'm going to run the memory/ floppy tests also.
Then I'm going to test midi/ stereo/ individual outputs. That should be enough?

To test the Emax, go to special 0 or 8 (can't remember exactly).
You will be asked for a code wich is 3629, "EMAX" on a telephone dial !

Well I finally had the change to meet the Emax. Almost everything is working but the faders don't. They work sometimes but in a very rough scale so maybe you get a 0 volume and then max but nothing in between. Maybe a little spray of contact cleaner will help. Floppy drive works great, I managed to download some banks to floppies using the AMAZING EMXP tool. Male choir sounds AWESOME!!!

What I noticed is the faded white color of the keys. I don't know why because I have a Juno106 and a DX7 and even today they are snow white. I also felt they offer a slight resistance at first when initially pressed but then they are too soft. Is that correct or they've been abused far too much during the past 20 years?

Looking forward to hear your thoughts about it. I haven't decided to buy it yet.

Maybe kept for a long time in a non smoke free environment? :P I noticed an edge burnt with a cigarette, you know the kind of burn when you the surface as an ashtray or something.
Is it feasible for the plastic case to be repainted? I noticed it's plastic.

I am pretty sure that this Emax is a PLUS model.
If you look at the first picture, you can see that there is a large gap between the Emax sticker and the SE sticker.
I think that there has been sitting a PLUS sticker between these two? It seems a little odd to me..

By the way, what is the model number?

Oh I didn't check the model number but yes I'm also suspecting this is a plus model.
