Hi,

I purchased a defective CDS3 and I am trying to repair it now.
I already fixed the dead gear for the loading mechanism and now I am facing the "not reading any of my CDs" issue.

I wonder if there is someone out there with a working drive.
Maybe someone can tell me if the CD should load without connecting the Emulator 2.
Right now I only connected the remote and set the dip switches accordingly. The Emulator does not need to be connected to see all the banks loaded into the display of the remote control? Or am I wrong?

Thanks for helping.  Wink

Still no progress.
I built a cable to connect the EII to the CDS3 and as a result the display on the remote goes blank.
If I disconnect the 500kHZ line the CDS starts but still does not communicate with the EII. Very strange. Is there anyone who can confirm that the CDS cable pinout is as follows (source: EmulatorArchive):

CDS3     EII
Pin 1      3
Pin 2      11
Pin 3      nc
Pin 4      nc
Pin 5      7
Pin 6      nc
Pin 7      9
Pin 8      10
Pin 9      2

Btw. I found something really funny while dumping the CDS3 EPROMs. At the end of the terminal software for the remote you can read this:

I don't know what the exact pin layout is of the DB9 port on the CDS3 - I have never owned one.
But... I'm pretty sure the CDS3 needs the 500khz signal: the Emulator-II and Emax require that the host computer (here: CDS3 drive) is clocked by the sampler in order to establish a  high speed data transfer.

I suggest you open the CDS3 (again :-) and check out the internal wiring of the DB9 port. It's probably easy to determine which pins are being used and what purpose they have (based on the destination of the wires/pins on the CDS3 board).

Hi Wintermute

I know your post is a while ago but I've been able to find a CDS3 to EII cable. My friend had one and he has meassured the wiring between the pins. Here goes the pin layout:

CDS3                    EII
1--------GND-------- 7
4-----------------------11
5-----------------------3
7-----------------------9
8-----------------------10
9-----------------------2

I hope this is useful to you.

Best regards

Brian
