Thank you for your help, unfortunately, I am experiencing my troubles with MIDI cables disconnected (to disconnect MIDI is even advised in the SD manual, if I remember well)... Anyway, otherwise the symptoms seem to be exactly the same, so perhaps it could lead to some solution...! Thanks again!

Hi Folks,

Good news.  Got a Mac Classic the other day.  What a gorgeous little machine! 

It works perfectly with Sound Designer so I can now ebay the ugly LCII and Performa 630.  I'll be having a big studio clearout in the next few weeks so I'll post here when I decide what's going. 

For all the folks still having problems with SD and your mac I would keep buying new Macs until you find one that works!
