Super Silent Fan Replacements


I read of an atari user replacing a mega st fan with one from
http://www.papst.de .  he said that they where very quiet.

does anyone know of any other quiet fans?

I replaced the fans in my EIII rack with these:

To be honest, it didn't make that much difference. The original ones are 23dB which is pretty quiet, and the noise they make is actually a bit comfortable. The new ones are 17dB and they are quieter, but most of the noise comes from the hard drive anyway.

do you think I could spray some type of lubricant spray into the EIII fan where the ball bearings are to make it more silent?

I have two EIII's and one of the EIII's fans sounds a lot more "less noisey" then the other one.  I'm guessing its cause the lubrication on the ball bearings.

argh just noticed these fans use 6 volts which i believe is too much for the EIII to handle :(

Its also a matter of CURRENT !

Look at the power consumption of the original fan. What is noted on its sticker ?

Is it noted in amperes, or watts ? The fans are apparently powered under 12volts. Please check this. After then, I will tell you what to do.

Now that I have an EIII completely stable up and running with CF cards I'm on the hunt again for the best case fan for the EIII!

according to the data sheet it has a

Rated Current (A) 0.07 ,
Rated Input (W) 0.84 ,
Rated rotating speed (min^-1) 1,700 ,
Air Flow 0.8 m^3/min & 28.3 CFM ,
Static Pressure 16.7 Pa,
Noise 23 dB

only measurement that is different from emulator archives information on the EIII rack fan is that the archive has 23 CFM compared to the datasheet's 28.3 CFM.





Now onto my problem of determining if the new fan will work in the EIII rack

I'm not sure specifically what values from the datasheet must correspond to the two new fans I have to buy so that they work in the EIII rack. 


1. The lowest rated dB fan that I found from newegg.com was this SilenX IXP-64-09

BUT after reading that link it looks like the SilenX draws more current, uses more watts, and doesn't rotate as quickly as the Sanyo Denki fan.

2. the next lowest rated dB fan was the Scthe's Gentle Typhoon

I think this one will work and will meet all the electrical requirements as well

I'm a little confused about the specifications that the replacement fan has to meet, according to the data sheet.  Dr. C any help or clarification if either of these fans would work would be greatly appreciated!

Good to hear that you've finally an EIII up and running.

Just seen your message....

What I would do :
Look at the original fan and pick the reference, see the ratings (power consumption, voltage, etc...) the find a fan dealer and ask him. If you give me the EXACT regercernce of teh original fan, and the size !the size is measured hole to hole in diagonal, like a computer screen) I can do this for you.
I think the fan is powered on the 12V, you have to check.

I would make a mod, adding a diode; kinda 1N4003, like on the drawing. It allows, because the fan is an inductive load, to avoid the reverse voltages getting back to the power supply and kiilng your machine.
Please, test your diode and don't plug it in reverse !!!!  DON OT PUT 1N4001 !

Please report your findings!  Also the model numbers you purchased...!

What I have found before with E4 rack, is that the noise is partly from the fan mechanical, but mostly from the resonance of the fan / air inside the chassis...

I don't think it's mechanical. I think it's the acoustic space resonating.  Is the total noise any quieter, or the same?

I think the way to help it is to lower the rpm's of the fans with a resistor, or variable resistor on the + line.  It would help if you had CF internal and no hard drive.  The good doctor might slap me.

As soundsubs and other have reported, new silent fans don't really cure the racket.   It's got something to due with the fan and or airflow resonating inside the chassis I think.

On the one hand, I kind of like the racket. It's a reminder of the GRAVITY of the SITUATION and how you had better drop some serious klang with your E-monster!  On the other hand....

The PSU fan is an extractor, drawing air over the PSU and out the back. That PSU does get quite warm.

The other mid case fan is drawing air through the card cage, and blowing it onto the HDD.

Us more highly evolved types  ;D who have broken free the shackles of the HDD and are booting off a CF card are wondering....  do we now need that mid case fan?   Or will the cards in the cage cook without it's extractive qualities ?

What about this: a larger diameter mid case fan turning much more slowly in the other direction, pushing cooler air (no HDD or boards to heat it up) through the card cage towards the PSU.  Maybe then, we could also lower the RPM's of the PSU fan a bit, because it's getting some free flow from the mid case fan.

The RPM's could be lowered by in-line resistors (I have done this on E4 rack) or even with in-line potentiometers.
