Title: It will soon arrive.... my DPX-1 !
Post by: Elmbeatz on January 20, 2009, 06:02:16 AM
Does anybody know if it's possible to connect any mass storage media to it?

(NOT the dedicated oldschool HD or the OMI drive)

Greetings,
Elm.

Just for your interest:

Although the manual doesn't clearly point this out:

Individual outputs are supported under OS 2.1

Elm.

Hi Elm,

unfortunately there is no way to connect any other mass storage device to the DPX-1. Another thing I hate about the DPX-1 is that it cant read the 3.5" disks I did with the EII. Only the 5.25" drive reads EII disks.
The DPX-1 is very limited but plays back the EII samples well. I miss some "dirt" in the sound compared to the real EII...but its still great.

Well, maybe that discussed new floppy emulator will provide some easier (probably "mass storage" style) disk handling...

The dpx-1 is very simple and limited indeed.
But it makes a great vintage collectors unit. And I love how it looks under my SP-12  ::)

Hi,

I just got a DPX yesterday with tons of floppy but from different format, not only EII.

That's a superb machine!!!

I plain to use DPX TOOLS for backup those sounds on a computer.

Do you know if Sample Dump works with a PC under windows xp?

Do you know where to find EII sample on the internet?

Thank you.

you can convert dpx images to EmuII files (DPX tools), and these to wav files (EMXP).
Is that what you're looking for?

I have a DPX-1 with OS 2.1 and trying to use the SDII Emulator on it but I am getting disk errors. I am converting the sound banks from SDII to DPX using the tools on esynthesis webpage. Any help would be greatly apprecitated. The way that I am converting them is using the batch option on E2DPX program then I just write the file/image on to the DPX formatted floppy. I tried approximately 10 banks and they are written but when I tried to load them on the DPX-1 all but one had (de) Disk Error displayed.

Thanks,

are you using DD disks?

Yes, I am using DD disks, but its strange that only 1/10 worked. The Banks that I am trying to copy to disk are the Northstar sounds from  the Universe of Sounds Volume 3. I extracted the individual Sounds from the CD using Esynthesis CDS3TOOL then used E2DPX to convert them. The banks I am trying out are in the DRUMS Folder created by CDS3TOOL. Some of the banks that gave me the (de)Disk error are Hip_Drums.DPX , Electronic_Drums.DPX and others. I have tried formating the disks with the DPX and also using the dpxformat.exe from Esynth.

Thanks in advance.

It's probably an alignment problem of the floppy disk drive...
I mean a kind of calibration difference between the drive in the DPX and the drive in the PC...

What happens if you write floppy disks on the DPX1 itself and then try to reload them in the DPX ? Can the DPX read its own disks ?
(you can do a "dump" of a previously loaded soundbank to a 3.5 floppy disk on the DPX - see DPX manual for more information)
And can DPXREAD read these disks written by the DPX1 ?

Instead of DPXREAD, DPXWRITE and DPXFORMAT you may also try OmniFlop.
If I remember well Jason has fixed the DPX support after some mail conversations I had with him, so OmniFlop should work fine with DPX disks. The files created by E2DPX can be written by both OmniFlop and DPXWRITE.
The floppy drivers you need to install for OmniFlop can live together with the FdRawCmd driver of DPXTOOLS on a Windows system, so that shouldn't be a concern...

Note: One of my DPX1 units also often shows the DE error. If that happens, I just keep trying the load button until the DPX succeeds in reading the disk. I think the floppy drive in my DPX1 is almost dead.
Time to replace it with the HxC SD Card unit  ;)

Thanks, Esynthesist. I'll try that. I hope this will correct the problem. I did have to open the DPX floppy drive to fix it as it was not detecting an inserted disk. I think my FD Drive is about to die soon also. I have over 100 disks that the DPX came with an only obout 5 do not work with it. I will try omniflop, thanks.

ps. I saw the youtube video on the HxC SD Card and it would be awsome to have something like it not just for the DPX but for other FD based Music Equiptment.

Thanks Esynthesist. It worked, I tried a different drive and now I am enjoying the wonderful EII sound libraries. I am hoping that when I get my hands on an EII the HxC SD card will ge available for it. I have been trying to come up with an EII for quite a while but, havent found the right one for the right price.

Once again, thanks for the help with the E2DPX conversion.
