Title: HxC SD or USB Floppy Emulator?
Post by: who on December 26, 2010, 05:32:20 PM
Which one are you going to pick and why?  I'm leaning towards the SD option.  Up to 32GB SDHC cards are supported.  Isn't that about 60,000 banks (theoretical) on one card???  :o

I found the following to mount the cards in the chassis:

I would definitely go for the SD version - this makes stand-alone operation of the EII possible.
And the SD HxC is just perfect: you can store hundreds of banks on the SD card, nicely organized in folders, just like the good old CDS3 OMI system.
And if you want USB connectivity, you can use the EMuSer :-) :-) which is faster than the HxC but doesn't allow for booting the E-II.
So my setup will be:
- drive 1 = SD HxC
- drive 2 = original 5.25 drive
- EMuSer USB connected to the RS422 port

That AOC case at neweggs seems perfect !
If only I would know where to buy that in Europe (Neweggs is not shipping outside of USA/PuertoRico)

Be careful though, because Andrei at the Yahoo group (who built a SD HxC into his EII) let me know that you really need the *full* frontpanel size in order to give room for the HxC LCD display AND the SD card slot which can not be moved from the HxC. The display's height is about the same as the 5.25 drive's height (i.e. display and its PCB), so there's no way to put it on top of the SD card, you have to put it aside.
But the SD card slot has been soldered in the middle of the HxC board; the HxC board needs the size of a 3.5 disk (from left to right).
So you have to install the LCD at the utmost left side of the frontpanel, while the HxC must be at the utmost right side (or the other way arund). There's only a margin of about 2 millimeters...

Hi Freaks!

I finally decided that time has come to order a HxC Emulator for my EII  :P

I understand that the SD version is the thing to go for. But I still wonder about the best way to mount it on/in the EII.
Has anyone found a good solution by now?
What do you think about the cased HxC version Lotharek offers?

Greetz,
Elm.

Like this?

 ;D

Sorry for mobile phone picture..

I used a floppy drive drawer (From ebay) and cut the holes for the LCD and push buttons.

I didn't bother with the SD card slot.. as with a 8GB card in there, I'm never going to need to pull it out.

Works perfectly.

That looks great!  Nice work.  Can we get some close up pics and maybe a list of the parts used?

I used HxC SD card

+ Floppy Drive bay drawer (From ebay.. search "5.25 drive bay storage") - The one I got looks nicer than the picture, and has an aluminium face (black) - It's a nice material to work with.

+ 3x Found push buttons

+ Ribbon cable

+ IDC connectors

+ A drill & a few square files + taking my time filing it nice and square and neat.
