I realize these are rare, but this puppy went for nearly $1000USD, and not even certain working order. ???

Absolutely normal. It's a collectors thing. Nobody needs that thing, it's all about WANTing it. So...

oh I totally understand about wanting it. I was thinking of putting in a bid myself when it was a lot less money. But at that price I guess it's more for a collector.

Checked out a couple of videos and it definitely has a sound of it's own. Synthmania had a video of the choirs, absolutely gorgeous.  :)
