Title: Smoking and noise "Emulator II"
Post by: DARKSHINE on January 26, 2011, 09:51:30 AM
 ???

Hello everyone

after receiving my Emulator II package (Ebay), after few minutes use.
Black smoking and noise, on  the left side (drive/psu ?) nothing inside
after turn off, it still works
I use it a few minutes only , what should I do ?
have it tested by a technician?,
or continue to use it, because there is no problem?

I lost the screw bolts? its size? ?

Thanks !   I LOVE EMULATOR II    Thank  !

Open it up.

Take pictures of the burnt components.

Post pictures.

(I'm betting $2 it's one of the tantalum capacitors in the lower left section of the board.. they were nice and toasted on mine)

I'd be sending it right back for a refund unless it was specified that it could be DOA.

Yep, that looks nice and burnt.

I bet it smells real good too.

0.47uf - 250V Capacitor

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/5pc-0-47uF-250V-polypropylene-film-capacitors-US-SHIP-/260710708835?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb391b663

Not saying that replacing that will fix the fault... there may be another reason why it was damaged.

I've had twice a similar thing happen to 2x Linn9000's switchmode powersupply.. a fair bit of smoke and lots of bad smell.

Whether you get it fixed or send it back is up to you.. you may even consider getting it repaired and ask for a partial refund.

Regards
Mike

I must change the capacitor soon
I buy on ebay, but it does not have the same width, and there are no Protection

Does this model would be more appropriate ?  (Metal Film)

The hole spacing does not matter so much.. As long as it's legs are long enough so you can bend them and get them to fit.

Yep,

0.47uf @ 250v

Yikes... not good advice!

I really wouldn't fit that cap - it will compromise the safety of the PSU.

The cap that has failed is a class X2 mains suppressor cap - as is the cylindrical cap on the other side of the common mode filter.

This MUST be replaced with a class X2 cap as they are designed to fail open circuit across mains circuits.  This is the reason why your EII only smoked vigourously and didn't make a big bang when it failed (ie. it did its job).  It also explains why your EII carried on working afterwards.  If this was a conventional cap then at the very least your mains fuse would have blown in sync with a large bang.

A hell of a lot of class X2 caps of that era are now failing due to age - I had one fail in an old computer last month in the same way.

A better choice would be something like this: (it is a higher voltage spec which is fine)

I sometimes during play (1/20 turn on )
volume come down, and the buttons do not respond

I am obliged to turn off and on again
because the volume sound is very down

is what can come from a voltage down ?

I find this:   http://www.synther.org/emulator2.html

They used a meanwell 50C power supply.. No need for the fan however.. They run rather cool.

They are great power supplies too.

One of these?
http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/259470/MEANWELL/T-50C.html

I need repairs on my EII PSU... A nearly drop-in solution solution like this would be perfect!

Is 50W max power with 5V @ 4A, +15V @ 1A, and -15V @ 1A going to be enough?

Looking a bit closer at the photos, it looks like the replacement PSU is this one:

Mean Well T-60C, 5V @ 7A, 15V @ 3A, -15V @ 1A

I installed the Meanwell T-60C yesterday, just as shown in the links above, and it works. The EII was having issues with no sound and now that problem has disappeared.

I bought the T-60C from Jameco.com for $35. Well worth it!

Great.
Thanks for the hint. Seems like a nice replacement unit.

Could you take a picture of the Meanwell installed in your EII, with all wires connected ?
And perhaps also give a short list of the connections you have made (voltage/pin/wire) and modifications (if any, either electrically or mechanically e.g. screws)
This kind of information is always useful for people who want to double-check whether they have done the installation in a correct way  ;)
Would be much appreciated !

Sure - I've decided to add a Meanwell 12V PSU as well, just for the floppy drive. The Shugart recommends a supply of 12V +/-1.2V, and the 15V I have now is a bit outside that range. There should be lots of room in the EII PSU ledge/platform to put both Meanwell units in there. I'll get photos after I get the other PSU in. It should be here in a week...
