Title: SD files transfer to Mac SE
Post by: xmota on May 18, 2009, 01:41:15 PM
Hi,

I have Mac formated CD-ROM with SD libraries. I would like to load them into my Mac SE 1/40.

I have external SCSI ZIP drive that works with SE1/40, but no CD-ROM. My studio computer is PC running Windows XP, with internal ZIP drive and CD-ROM.

Which utility/software will be the best to copy the SD files to ZIP disk on PC? I can open the CD-ROM with trial versions of TransMac and Macdrive. But there is no option to copy from Mac formatted disk to another mac formatted disk. btw. SE1/40 refused to read ZIPs Mac formatted in these utilities. (Have no idea about the differences among HTFS, HTFS+, HTFS+extended). What is the format required by the SE 1/40 ? If I am going to buy any of these softwares I would like to know that it will work ;)

Thanks

Tomas

And you are worrying about HTFS, HTFS+, HTFS+extended ?  :D

Come on...

Okay, I may have an utility, I have to dig in a giant pile of dusty SONY 650 Mo Magneto-Optical cartridges, hoping the reader still works...  ;D

System 6.0.8, Finder 6.1.8

You won't be able to connect a cd rom drive successfully under OS 6.x, as this OS doesn't yet support CD-Rom drives.
You need to upgrade to system 7 to get it work.
AND: be sure to get an Apple CD 300 drive, as the driver for it is easily available on the net.

(I had the same problems).

But anyway, I also transferred the files from CD to zip disks (on PC). I think I used a trial version of MacDrive. Don't forget to specify the filetype (resource fork) of the *.EII files in the MacDrive preferences dialog which is:

File Type = "E2BK", Creator = "XFER", MS DOS Extension = ".EII"

Very very important, as SoundDesigner won't recognize the files without this.

Good Luck,
Elm.

EDIT: It's best to format the zip disks on the Mac itself, before copying the files on them via PC.

OK, I´ll upgrade to OS 7 and check the eBay for CD300.

Hi,

so the MacDrive can be the solution for me. transfer the files from CD to ZIP drives there with the correct resource fork.

Exactly.  And try to format the zip disks with your old mac before.

Just a tip: Due to 100 MB limited space of the zip disks, I sorted "families" of musical instruments on my zips, for example strings, or percussion, etc. It's a bit of a hassle, as the OMI cd rom structure is a bit confusing.

OK I´ve just bought the MacDrive. I need it anyway to upgrade to OS 7 and to transfer other files to Mac. (I found some nice editors for Yamaha VL1 and other)

I don't know about that Yamaha thing, but if you just want to use Sounddesigner for EII (with your zip drive), you do not necessarily need to upgrade. In fact the SE boots and runs a lot faster with system 6 installed.

I would upgrade just because of the CD-ROM. So I can stay with 6.01 + ZIP drive. Do you have any experience with external SCSI harddrives on 6.01 (maximum capacity supported, compatible types of drives, drivers necessary, etc.)

?!?!

I think I don't undertsand....   Now ARE you going to upgrade or NOT??

You DON'T need to, IF you just want to use your zip drive.
IF you want to use a CD-ROM drive you MUST upgrade.

I only have experience with a CD-Rom drive (on my second Mac SE, which has OS 7). Any SCSI devices can be stressful, as most of them WILL need drivers, etc etc. Even for the Apple CD 300 you need the universal cd rom driver from apple.

I am not going to upgrade. I stay with 6.01 and ZIPs. I´ll try the SCSI harddrive maybe.

Are you a woman ?

I ask, because Freud said (authentic) :
"I studied psychiatry, psychology, psychanalysis for more that 50 years of my life and I am still asking myself the same question : "WHAT DO THEY WANT, EXACTLY?

Well, to be honest, I was asking myself the SAME question as XMOTA (do I upgrade or not...) over and over again...  In the end I stayed with system 6. Those old macs are just like the old emu's.... Do not touch anything as long as it works properly...  ;)

If it works, don't "fix" it .

Hi,

Finally my Mac works with CD-ROMs under OS6 :)

The working configuration:

Apple SE1/40 (4Mb RAM) running OS 6.0.8
Apple CD600e CD-ROM (bought on eBay for few bucks, CD300 should work as well)
Apple Desktop manager http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/download/desktopmgr201.sit.bin (http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/download/desktopmgr201.sit.bin)
Apple CD-ROM driver version 5.3.1 http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk/Apple_CD-ROM_D-5.3.1.sit.hqx (http://www.macdrivermuseum.net/disk/Apple_CD-ROM_D-5.3.1.sit.hqx)

(both driver and desktop manager in system folder, both necessary)

Enjoy
