I wonder how much of the swapping was for custom disks as opposed to the retail libraries available at the time?

I would suspect they were swapping library disks.
It seems more people use the EII for playback rather than actually sample with it.
Which is a shame because I've found the EMU line of samplers to be very intuitive and user friendly.

Also had an Ensoniq EPS at one time, and the EMU is much easier.

I wonder how many of us EII users (past and present) have made large libraries of our own.  I bet there is some great stuff out there.

This video is great!  I figured out that this swap party was put on by EMU themselves.  If you watch this EMU video there are snippets of the swap party video in there.
