Title: Drumulators II and III...
Post by: lubb on June 18, 2010, 11:33:11 AM
I say, why to not open the forum also for Drumulators II and III, sometimes called as SP 12 and SP 1200...   ;) ;) ? The only reason they are not here are their mismatched nicknames...?  ;) ;) Would it not be nice to have all the vintage family things under one roof..? (Despite the existence of those other SP forums...!)

Sorry, if the question was already discussed and decided...

Wouldn't it be SP12/SP1200 sometimes called the Drumullator II?  Just sayin'  :P

But yeah, I've always felt like this site should be the one stop E-Mu place.  I feel that way even more since I have an SP now.

Of course, you are right...  :) That is why I have put no less than two wink smileys... to signalize the little mystification... in the name of justification...

Sorry, but you're wrong.
The early SP-12 was called "Emulator Sampling Percussion SP-12", as you can see on the attached picture. So, these machines definitely belong in the "Emulator" section.

Thank you for this expert contribution..! I did not know that... Certainly, the SP-12 looks much better properly labeled as you example...  :)

What says Emulator Archive:

"Drumulator II Roger Linn's company continued to set the pace for drum machine development in the early 1980's, and after the roaring sucess of the Drumulator, E-mu Systems moved into the upper end of the market in 1984. The Drumulator II was a complete revision of the original. It was designed with user sampling, MIDI and SMPTE, far better controls and a LCD. It takes its looks straight from the Emulator II, as well as using the same buttons and sliders ! The original PCB's even have Drumulator II on them, as well as "Paul is the Walrus" in mirror reversed writing. Those crazy guys at Santa Cruz!"  ;D

My post was just for fun...   ;)  not really meant serious..
Sure, the SP series could be called Drumulator successors.  The image of the "Emulator" labelled SP-12 just came to my mind when reading this thread. I bet that one above HAS these "Drumulator II" PCBs inside.

If you take off the Emax front panel, under the display, its written :
"In case of fire, break window"

As well, there ia a way (I forgot, I think ist by "Special" menu, if you press a choice, the display goes blank and then you see an E-mu (the bird) passing running and its written : "Here's E-mu !"

The the machine retirns to normal state.

There is a "Bus driver" drawn on the Drumulator PCB as well, and as well on the service manual.

Is the bus driver on the back of the board?  I've had it open a few times and don't remember seeing anything like that on the front.

... and now a teaser for all experts here:

On what E-mu PCB and close to what internal part there is written:

" I'M  A  BUCKEYE,  BABY  !! "

(But it is slightly off-topic...)  :)
