What? where?! The only one I saw was on German ebay, they wanted one and a half grand for it!!!

Edit: Oh, I see it. One and a half grand. That's over double the price of every other EII I've ever seen on Ebay.

yes, that price is extortionate. The most expensive one I've ever seen was £800, one went recently for £400 with 400 disks, which I couldn't afford. I was gutted, but I've sold my JX-3P now so I have the funds. With postage, he wants £2000. That's just not acceptable.

As much as I want one, you'd have be be a nutter to pay double price. Should be a law against rip off merchants.

Ugh, so frustrating. Any ideas where else to look, been a year now. I try Sound on Sound, emusonacid, local ads, car boots, 2nd hand shops, synth restorers...I just want to give one a good home! <3

Is it that hard these days?

Two or three years ago, I bought two EIIs at nearly the same time, both for ~ 500/600 EUR. Unfortunately, only one had RS 422, but nevermind..

It's from a synth restore place. Apart from the obvious, is there anything I should be asking about? Specific ports and stuff? I don't have an old mac but could buy one. Already found a load of the old floppies in a second hand shop which was a minor miracle. I think it has about 30 disks with it.

The most important thing is, that it's got an RS 422 interface (NOT the older RS232 which looks the same...) - otherwise, you cannot hook it up with a mac or that new USB-RS244 thing.


Most precious about the EII is it's library. To which you can only have access via RS 422 (unless you have the whole library on disks - which is PRETTY unlikely...  ::) )

Going by the 3 I've seen on Ebay in the past year, (that i couldn't afford) that's a good price, yeah. Thanks for that, I'll ask the bloke which port it is.

Oh I know I need Sound designer, but which mac do I need?

I'd go for a Macintosh SE (system 6.x or 7.x). I've two of those, they work well.

I doubt if they can tell you wether it's RS 232 or 422 ... Best thing would be to open the thing before you buy it and check, if it's got a rev 1 logical board (the right one)
plus the latest eproms in it..

Agh this is getting more and more complicated...its a couple of hours drive, too.

you can call the guys and ask if they check the logigal board rev.-# for you. Also, the Eprom revisions (scanner & main) are labelled on their upsides. Shouldn't be a problem.

It's funny. I feel like I know of a couple for sale in the US on the market for a while now - and that's usually where I see them pop up on ebay. Seems like the bulk of the demand is UK/Europe though. To bad they are so fragile and expensive to ship.

I'd only risk it through ebay/paypal but I'd import if the price was right.

Be aware, that you WILL have to fully service the unit after a journey like that (reseating ALL ICs etc...), as these things are REALLY fragile. (Much much more than your Emax).

I know I'll get told off for this, but I'm also looking for an Akai AX-80. That and the EII have always been my dream synths (well, a j8 too, but that ain't gonna happen, is it) so I thought I'd just tack this on to the end. I have adverts on every site going, so, just on the offchance...  ::) Seen 2 in the US, but they won't ship.

42 here.   Had an Emulator 2 (not the plus but had a second drive) in 1988 (When I was 19) and then bought an new SP1200 and then an Emulator III in 1992 (at 23)...  Then buggered off to persue career things which only made me miserable.

I have to say how pleased I am to see someone of the soft synth generation using emu hardware and understanding what they offer over VST stuff.

Hopefully later this week I will be the proud owner of 128 voice E4X and E6400's ... Then for the MPC

 :D. I wish.... No, I started a computer business when I was 18. I had NO social life and just worked flogging PC's to insurance salesmen and writing databases for insurance offices to record sales data and produce daily reports.

Do not lump me in with the VST generation! I'm 29 not 18!
I grew up on DM, Erasure, Jarre, had my first keyboard at the age of 7, a monophonic 70's Bontempi effort with one preset, then when I was 10 I got a Yamaha keytar (which annoyingly is now worth £200, flogged it at a car boot...)

The only time I ever use VST's is when I don't have the keyboard I want, I only tend to use the two Korg Legacy ones, although i have loads, I don't use them. Sorry but IMO you can't touch the real thing, can't beat the feeling of having an original synth under your fingers, tangible knobs and sliders, and all these idiot emo's with their minikorgs and..and...I'm ranting again. I was into JMJ at the age of 7, 'nuff said. Taught myself bass and guitar at age 14 as well, used to be in a band. Producers course starts next month...hectic days!

The EII is my dream. At the age of 9 I discovered Alan Wilder, and that was it for me. He's amazing, the sampler is amazing, the sound is like no other, although sadly I have managed to substitute the M1 for a close second when needed, and of course there's always the Emax. I can tell when I listen to pretty much any 80's song which synths were used, and every time I hear an EII I get goosebumps. Amazing. Shame most women would rather prat about and wear Playboy and listen to R'n'B then get into something that's really worth doing. I live for technology and synths, and I'll never change.

The EII is the best. All in all so simple...
You'll go nuts when you get yours. But remember -  it's GOt to be Rev.1, RS422 - for THE libraries. Incredible stuff. The sound........... hmmm yumm. Even Emax remains pale..

I've been nosing around for keyboards and I've been approached about an emulator II. As much as I'd like one I think it's unlikely unless it's a steal. So once I've found out about it I'll send you the details.
