Title: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 09:13:12 AM Just purchased an EII and am excited to start working with it. I knew going into the purchase that my EII may have problems, but so far everything seems to be working. The one exception is that I can't hear anything after loading sounds from disk. I followed the "instant gratification" instructions in the manual and can see the names of presets in the display, but when I play the keyboard I hear nothing. I can hear very slight crackling when I adjust the mix out volume.
I hope I'm just being a bonehead. Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks, who Title: Re: New user Post by: Elmbeatz on October 23, 2010, 09:42:36 AM Try plugging your output cable into the individual outputs first.
Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 10:03:06 AM Sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried that. Still nothing. :(
Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 10:11:45 AM At first I was using headphones, but now I have it connected to my audio interface. All I hear is some low frequency thumping when I press the keys and with the gain cranked. I can tell that at least some of the voices are trying to sound.
Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 10:34:39 AM I tried connecting each of the channel outputs to my audio interface and I basically get the same sound from them that I do from the mix output; low frequency garbled thumps.

Open it up, and press your thumb on every chip and connector inside. UNPLUG it before, AND TOUCH A RADIATOR before. Let's see what happens afterwards. (No kidding, good luck.) Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 11:22:38 AM Case open and IC pressing in progress ;D
Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 11:33:26 AM thanks for your help. I pressed every chip except the ones under the power supply and the memory expansion board and rebooted the EII. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I just get thumping when I press the keys.
Title: Re: New user Post by: Elmbeatz on October 23, 2010, 11:40:53 AM shit.
??? Damn. hm... What kind of disk you got? Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 11:43:44 AM The only disks I have are sound disks from Northstar.
Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 11:48:41 AM For what it's worth, I read posts about problems with the power supply. I don't see any browning or burn marks on the connectors or wires.
Title: Re: New user Post by: Elmbeatz on October 23, 2010, 12:18:54 PM If your disk drives don't hang, I think everything's allright with your PSU.
But I have no more idea what could be wrong. I'm no tech, so... Try emptying your ram and sample something yourself. Maybe the disk's content is crap. Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 23, 2010, 12:28:58 PM Thanks again. A few northstar disks were included with the EII and I've tried most of them and get the same result. For what it's worth, I disabled all but one voice and then modified the filter setting for the entire keyboard. I can hear the filter cutoff and Q settings change, but just barely. The sound is supposed to be brass, but it sounds nothing like brass.
who Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 24, 2010, 09:17:19 AM Good news and bad news: I've removed and cleaned most of the ICs and it now works! Well, at least I can hear sounds and they sound like they should. The bad news is that the top seven keys do not work: When I try to assign a voice to those keys, the EII doesn't recognise that I'm pressing the keys.
The other bad news is that I damaged one of the RAM chips on the memory expansion board. Fortunately, they appear to be relatively easy to source inexpensively. Title: Re: New user Post by: Elmbeatz on October 25, 2010, 02:09:47 AM Sample span of the EII is one octave up/one octave down.
Try to assign the ORIGINAL sample to c4 or c5. Maybe your preset samples just are located underneath.. Greetz, Elm. Title: Re: New user Post by: monkeyman on October 26, 2010, 01:57:29 AM This same thing happened to me when me EII was sent to me in the post.
I opened the unit up and found that the added memory board (the board on top of the main board) had come out of its socket. I pushed it back in and closed the lid and luckily for me this fixed it. I hope this helps. Cheers... Title: Re: New user Post by: who on October 29, 2010, 02:16:34 PM I replaced a bad chip on the memory board, made sure the board was securely fastened and everything appears to be working except the top seven keys. I'm at a loss. ???
I also created a separate thread called "dead key range" and will stop posting here. |
