Title: Dynamix II EIII Restoration Project
Post by: djscratchd on August 18, 2013, 02:53:37 PM
I'm very excited to have joined this Forum in an attempt to resurrect my ancient EIII Keyboard beast.

Here is the fist initial video of the power up and a few pix of the machine

Any help / comments are all greatly appreciated as I know this is going to be a challenge.

Best Wishes,

Noller

I unplugged and replugged in the ribbon and power cycled the beast and low and behold the LCD began displaying information !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fcK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its looking for the SCSI drive which isn't showing up then looking at the floppy drive. I need to get my hands on the OS Boot floppy.

This is very exciting!

This is a friendly word of warning:  Mine was behaving the same way (blocks in the display, buttons lit and unresponsive) and I discovered that I made the same mistake others have made.  The ribbon cable between the front panel and the motherboard was pinched and caused the cable to short out.

My EIII has been in the shop since. :'(

Who, read post 2 ^^ above I got past that and its now looking for the boot floppy or scsi drive.

I'm going to download the image and write EIII os 2.4.2 to a floppy and report back.

Thanks for the heads up! any help is mega appreciated!

That's good news!  You can see what happened to mine because of the pinched cable:

And here's my original post:

Hope this all helps.

Woooooooah, I spoke way too soon! I powered it back on after copying the image of the 2.4.2 EMU EIII OS to a double sided floppy tossed the floppy in the disk drive and flipped the power on and to my dismay... nothing ....

seems like the ribbon cable that is connected to the underside of the faceplate has one side broken off and guess what happened? I just made the other side match  :(

Holy crap

So I put the top back on and screwed it all back together and for the hell of it plugged the power cable in and turned on the power and this is what happened>

At least we have characters showing instead of black squares.

It appears to be booting from the old internal SCSI drive OS 2.4.2

Then we arrive at this screen, none of the buttons seem to be getting me into any menus

That's my update.

Just for testing:

Unplug the Y-powercable from the internal HDisk, let the 50 pin SCSI cable connected. Boot with the OS Floppy Disk...(takes time). Does any of the Knobs now reacting ?
!!! Also unplug any external SCSI Devices & 25 PIN SCSI Cable !!!

Can anyone point me in he direction of a replacement ribbon cable used to attach the bottom of the keyboard top to the computer section?

A part number for the ribbon and place to order it at would help a lot.

I know I will need a new one of these too

Okay - just wanna make sure it's not SCSI related. (this happens - if the booting device lose scsi connection or power down)

Well if you are on the bright side of life - it might be just the ribbon cable !!!

After you have reanimated your machine to a base level the fun part starts over... searching for bad or dead voices, replacing faulty BB PCM51 chips, replacing ribbon cables & connectors, cleaning contacts, fine tune recalibration sessions, a.s.o....

But then the sun is going to shine again :)

Good luck and i'll keep my fingers crossed !

Thanks to member lio.ws, the part includes both the connector and the cable:

I have both the OLED and CF mods in my EIII and can confirm both work.

Found the reason why the front buttons sat a little bit low

Seems that these 3 standoff bolts are not attached to the underside of the face panel so maybe I can find an epoxy that can weld them into place nicely.

Shown below is where the ribbon connects to the underside of the front faceplate.

I'm wondering if there is a way to maybe re-pinch in the tiny forks that connect to the ribbon and figure out a way to clip the top of it to the bottom. Maybe I can find something to clamp the two pieces together.

Title: Re: Dynamix II EIII Restoration Project

Upon inspection of the ribbon cable that mounts to the underside of the front panel, I noticed that the everything looked fine except the top of the cable connector's sides that clipped it into place were broken off :(

This left me with the challenge of how I could hold that top of the connector on firmly so that the cable would stay in it's place and not become detached from the assembly.

So I took a trip to the friendly neighborhood Home Depot store for a look around and this is what I came up with:

from the above part located in the electrical area I used a dremel tool and cut out the two parts which I will make into standoffs and epoxy to the board.

From the above cut out part I used the dremel to cut it down to size (just high enough so that its just under the height of the ribbon connector top) I made two of them.

The back piece I need to cut into a bar that will sit on top of the ribbon connector that will hold it into place. Its rigid enough that it should hold it down nicely.

I will now use some epoxy that I will mix and glue the two standoffs into place directly to the board.

Here is the finished brace to secure the top of the ribbon cable cap firmly down on the ribbon.

I used epoxy to hold the bottom two sides down that the screws screw into.

Next I'm going to attempt to cut of the end and re use the cable if it doesn't work ill purchase a new cable and try that.

Shown above ^^^  the standoffs that were detached from the board just got epoxied back into place.
