How important is it that the date code match when buying replacement memory chips?

Apparently date code doesn't matter because I installed a chip with a different date code and it fixed my problem (crackles in samples).

Thank you for the help I've received from this forum!  (That isn't sarcasm.  I truly appreciate the wealth of knowledge available here.)
