I've done what you're panning to do A LOT in the nineties ( Smiley ), with my Emax.
Sequencer was a Kawai Q-80 (great machine).

The supermode thing is really easy to program and to get into (much better than on the EII).

Being tight on midi data is no problem for emax at all (REALLY tight).

I'd use the emax.  I've once tried this workflow with the EII, and it sucked, wasn't the same.
