Not hearing any audio preview while sampling with EIII rack

So I just finally got my EIII rack today and I'm trying to sample my 808 into the EIII.

When I activate sampling I can see the threshold of the sample coming in and it will sample the instrument once i activate sampling, but I don't hear the sample until after I have sampled the sound. I can't even hear the incoming 808 when I'm looking at the VU meter. But once it's sampled then I can play it back on my keyboard, but it's really frustrating because I can't hear what I'm sampling!

So is that normal?

It's also saying sample overload sometimes even when it's not clipping...

Any help would be much appreciated, I've been reading through the manual but I don't see anything about not being able to preview the incoming audio when I'm getting ready to sample.

This is why I sample from my mix table outs (cable from stereo outs to EIII ins), so I can actually hear the source sound.
