As it becomes to be hard to get replacement hard drives for our eIII, did any of you tried to boot the machine without any hard drive inside?
I like to work with floppies, and the EIII would be mutch more quiet ;-)

NO WAY ! It makes a blank display and the machine freezes instantly.

When this happens, first thing to look is to put another disk

Exactly. I think there is a way to cheat by putting a SCSI terminator instead of the disk, but I am not sure
Some guys made a modification here, replacing the disk by a memory card !

eddyemma put a CF card in your EIII!

http://eiiiforum.com/index.php?topic=4.0  here is a thread on that topic.

One of my EIII's has two 1 gb CF cards in it.  So it is like having two HD's that are 1 gb each.  & CF has no moving parts; it is much more silent compared to having a HD in it.

if by software you mean the OS , yes you can install the OS on the CF card & it will run the OS upon startup from the CF card i.e boot from the CF card.

the cf card takes 2 hrs to format so it will be sitting there for a good while.  Once its formatted you install the OS and install a blank bank (if you can install a blank bank, for some reason i couldn't).

funny thing is after i formated and installed the OS I couldn't save a blank bank, don't know why.  When I shutdown and rebooted the EIII, everything ran normally, without having the blank saved bank after formatting and OS install  Huh.

Then once it started up I saved a blank bank.

When I have more time I'm going to make a post on that thread with my pics etc

all the info is pretty much there

http://eiiiforum.com/index.php?topic=4.0

i'll make a post soon where I outlay all the gear I purchased & all the steps I did to install the cf cards.  I'll try to make this post as detailed as possible with images to go along etc.

the most difficult part really is just making sure you have the correct jumper settings on the acard, but thanks to Karl Scott this was super easy.
