I won the $496 unit mentioned above.  Just got it yesterday.  I think the HD is bad, then again I intended to replace it with a 3.5" anyway.  The main reason I thought it was a good wager is that I just finished restoring an SP-1200 so I have a feel for the E-Mu way of engineering, and for what things can go wrong.  I didn't think it could be too bad if it was powering up and displaying something.

It should cost me around $250 to get it in great shape:
$100 for 3.5" drive kit
$65 for a new Noritake VFD display (IMO much better than an LCD display)
$35 for two original buttons, two original fader knobs
$15 for two Kawai K1 Keys
$25 for touch-up paint/sandpaper/brushes

The Noritake VFD you are referring to, is this a drop in replacement or will it require re-engineering the power and pinout connections?

I would like to get rid of the EL displays in all of my E-mu stuff if possible. I just don't want to muck about with kludgey retrofits if possible.

Kind Regards,

In the case of the SP-1200, all I had to do was flip the 14-pin input (pin 1 became 14, pin 14 became 1, etc) going into the display and it worked perfectly.  (Also, I did not use the 2 much thicker inverter power wires at all anymore. I just removed these entirely.)

I haven't actually opened up the EII to check this yet, but the display looks identical so I bet it's the exact same situation.

Thank you esynthesist for that rundown of the normal boot pattern.  I'm sure this will be usefull information when it comes to purchasing an untested EII.

Good luck to you ryansupak!  Let us know how it turns out.
