Dear All,

I'm new here. I'm also from Belgium (Liège) like others on this Forum.
I do not yet have Emulator sampler and my topic here is to know if I need to buy one or not.
I'm looking for Depeche Mode sounds in order to eventually create a DM Cover Band.
As I know a lot of DM sounds were coming from Emulator samplers.
Do you think that these sounds were coming mainly from E-Mu library or from their own sampling process.
I can get some synths sounds from my own keyboards and some drums samples from their recordings and own samples but some specific sounds seems to come from Emulator.
Do I need to buy an EII, Emax or an EIII with original library ?

Regards,

Pierre.

To be honest, it wasn't the Emu-samplers that defined the sound of Depeche Mode. They did help, but it was mainly the input of Daniel Miller and for a certain period Alan Wilder who defined a lot of the DM sound.

Daniel Miller had a no preset policy. So you won't find many preset sounds on the DM albums. As a consequence, I would say that you won't be needing the EIII library. There are almost no DM sounds to be found in that library.

Most of the sounds were actually created and sampled with a Synclavier. And transfered to the Emulators for touring. On Violator they used the EIII a lot and I did find some preset sounds in the EIII library that they used.

Here are some good articles where you can learn more about how the DM sound was created:
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/articles/classictracks_0207.htm
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec98/articles/daniel.624.htm
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan98/articles/alanwilder.htm

That doesn't mean that you don't have to use an Emulator :-) They surely look good on stage and they sound very good. But they won't give you an instant DM sound.

Best,
David

I think I came across pretty many familiar DM sounds when browsing through the entrire EII library. Anyway, the "golden DM era" is, I would say, pretty influenced by that EII sound...

If you have the right sounds, you do not need explicitey an EIII. Any of the newer models can load EIII samples.

I´m not completely sure if the software Emulator X can do it without conversion, but the E64/6400 Ultra series can do it for sure.

The Hardware significantly adds character though (if you ask me...)
