Just purchased an EII and am excited to start working with it.  I knew going into the purchase that my EII may have problems, but so far everything seems to be working.  The one exception is that I can't hear anything after loading sounds from disk.  I followed the "instant gratification" instructions in the manual and can see the names of presets in the display, but when I play the keyboard I hear nothing.  I can hear very slight crackling when I adjust the mix out volume.

I hope I'm just being a bonehead.  Does anyone have suggestions?

Try plugging your output cable into the individual outputs first.

At first I was using headphones, but now I have it connected to my audio interface.  All I hear is some low frequency thumping when I press the keys and with the gain cranked.  I can tell that at least some of the voices are trying to sound.

I tried connecting each of the channel outputs to my audio interface and I basically get the same sound from them that I do from the mix output; low frequency garbled thumps.

Okay - 

Open it up, and press your thumb on every chip and connector inside.
UNPLUG it before, AND TOUCH A RADIATOR before.

Let's see what happens afterwards.

thanks for your help.  I pressed every chip except the ones under the power supply and the memory expansion board and rebooted the EII.  Unfortunately, it didn't help.   I just get thumping when I press the keys.

The only disks I have are sound disks from Northstar.

For what it's worth, I read posts about problems with the power supply.  I don't see any browning or burn marks on the connectors or wires.

If your disk drives don't hang, I think everything's allright with your PSU.
But I have no more idea what could be wrong. I'm no tech, so...

Try emptying your ram and sample something yourself. Maybe the disk's content is crap.

Thanks again.  A few northstar disks were included with the EII and I've tried most of them and get the same result.  For what it's worth, I disabled all but one voice and then modified the filter setting for the entire keyboard.  I can hear the filter cutoff and Q settings change, but just barely.  The sound is supposed to be brass, but it sounds nothing like brass.

Good news and bad news:  I've removed and cleaned most of the ICs and it now works!  Well, at least I can hear sounds and they sound like they should.  The bad news is that the top seven keys do not work:  When I try to assign a voice to those keys, the EII doesn't recognise that I'm pressing the keys.

The other bad news is that I damaged one of the RAM chips on the memory expansion board.  Fortunately, they appear to be relatively easy to source inexpensively.

Sample span of the EII is one octave up/one octave down.

Try to assign the ORIGINAL sample to c4 or c5. Maybe your preset samples just are located underneath..
